On Parenthood: six months old

Six months! Happy half-birthday to my sweet boy. How did we get here so fast?

Everything that he has been working on he is now mastering – especially his hand coordination. He is incredibly strong for being such a tiny human! My favorite thing in the whole world is when his little hands reach out and grab my face (So long as he doesn’t grab a chunk of my hair too).

He finds mobiles and activity mats more entertaining now that he can reach the dangling toys; but better than toys, he loves to reach out and grab beer bottles and wine glasses. We’re in trouble.

We had our first family trip this past month, which included 16 hours of driving roundtrip. He did surprisingly well, but we did have to leave in the middle of the night so that he was asleep for most of it. He met so many friends and family and loved to “people watch!” Now that we have gained confidence in traveling with him, we hope to plan more trips.

We are in leap 5 of his mental development, which is known as “the world of relationships.” He is processing how distance can separate objects – and people. This means he knows when I’m around and when I’m not, and it has made for more noticeable tantrums. But new this month – we can stop him from crying by simply laughing loudly. He starts to turn his tears into a giggle like he’s trying to figure out what’s so funny. It cracks us up every time.

Speaking of baby laugh, this guy has his dad’s laugh – it’s more of a quiet chuckle than an actual laugh. Where he lacks in volume he makes up in facial expressions. He is incredibly animated!

He STILL hasn’t rolled over, but he does turn from side to side easily. He is more interested in trying to stand up on his own. He can also sit in a wobbly tripod pose, but quickly falls to the side.

We have officially started solids and are excited to see what he likes and doesn’t like. To celebrate his half-birthday we gave him some mashed avocado, and he absolutely loved it.

As of his last check-up, he is in the 95th percentile weighing in at 21 pounds and 27.5 inches. He wears size 12-18 month clothes and his cloth diapers are on their biggest setting!

Likes: Giggles, grunting, being thrown in the air, jumping, cartoons (especially Mickey Mouse Club), walks, car rides, people watching, feeling new textures, being sung to (especially Itsy Bitsy Spider), teething toys (especially Sophie the Giraffe), nighttime feedings, warm baths, infant massages.

Dislikes: Teething, staying up too late, getting dressed, having to get out of the bath.
